I, Chris, was a chaplain for the first ever ASP (
association of surfing professionals) contest in Taidong, Taiwan. This was a very
big deal for the surfing community in Taiwan and the local government.
It gives Taiwan more exposure as a surfing destination internationally
and also helps surf tourism and industry in the local area.
So what did I do as a chaplain for the contest? Some of you might be wondering. I got a pass to be in the competitors area and just did what I usually do. Make relationships and be available for anything.
Although there were many international competitors including the world longboard champion and many former champions.
I spent most of my time hanging, supporting, and hooting the Taiwan crew. Many of whom are friends of mine. It was great to connect and support them as they surfed against their "idols" as they would say.
I
was really encouraged from this opportunity as I feel it opened up knew
opportunities for the future to serve in the surfing community and be
Jesus' hands and feet there.
Although I didn't pray for anyone or have any significant
conversations I believe this is a part of the relationship and trust
building for when opportunities do come to share; the surfers would be
more willing to listen to a friend rather than a stranger.
Its amazing how the Lord arranges things because this is
totally something I never would have thought of doing. But now I feel
like a door has been opened for future opportunities in this area.
